Share

The first endowed chairs in cardiovascular surgery and gastrointestinal cancer at Hoag Hospital were named earlier this month, according to a hospital news release.

Cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Aidan Raney, named the James & Pamela Muzzy endowed chairman in cardiovascular surgery, and digestive disease expert Dr. John Lipham, named the James & Pamela Muzzy endowed chairman in gastrointestinal cancer, were recognized Dec. 7 at the inaugural Hoag Hospital Foundation’s Endowed Chair Investiture Ceremony.

The creation of the positions is possible due to a donation by PIMCO founding partner Jim Muzzy and his wife, Pam.

“The funds from the endowed chairs will allow Hoag to stay on the leading edge of improving technology and programs for our patients in cardiovascular surgery and gastrointestinal cancer,” Dr. Richard Afable, Hoag president and chief executive, said in a prepared statement. “The concept of endowed chairs puts Hoag on the same playing field as leading academic institutions and we look forward to developing these world-class programs in order to provide the highest quality care to the community we serve.”

Hoag has four other endowed chair positions revolving around cancer, cardiac care, memory loss and cognitive impairment and neurosciences.
