South Coast Plaza finished the 2011-12 fiscal year with $1.4 billion in taxable sales, according to an Orange County Business Journal report.

The number puts the Costa Mesa shopping center, with its 250 stores, significantly ahead of its nearest competitor down in Newport Beach, Fashion Island. The 160-store center reported $576 million last fiscal year and came in No. 2 within the county’s top 20 shopping centers, the journal reported.

Next to South Coast Plaza, Metro Pointe had $200.4 million and ranked No. 10 on the journal’s list. South Coast Collection on Hyland Avenue was No. 19 with $120 million.
