UC Irvine’s Police Department officially welcomed its newest officer during a swearing-in ceremony this week.

Officer Paul Riscalla took the oath at the University Hills Community Center after graduating from the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy earlier this month, according to a news release from UCI police.

Riscalla is a UCI graduate who interned with the campus Police Department and then worked as a community service officer in charge of hiring.

After graduating from UCI with a bachelor’s degree in business economics, Riscalla worked at a start-up technology company while putting himself through reserve academies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.

UCI police then hired him to sponsor him through the sheriff’s academy.

Riscalla was recognized as the No. 1 overall recruit in his graduating class, UCI police said.

“This is an outstanding achievement on Paul’s part, especially given the high level of competition within his graduating class,” the release said, noting that six people in the 66-person class were UCI graduates.
