The Newport-Mesa Unified School District changed guards Tuesday night with the appointment of a new board president.

Trustee Dave Brooks was unanimously chosen the 2012 board president. He has previously served as president in 2006 and was most recently vice president.

Brooks started his first meeting off on a positive note with a speech on the harm of negative talk and a list of 85 good things going on in the district.

He is currently serving a four-year term after being re-elected in 2008 to represent Area 1, a portion of Costa Mesa from around Fairview Road to the Santa Ana River.

Brooks served on the Costa Mesa Police Department for 30 years, rising to the rank of captain. He is still involved with the department as a chaplain.

Brooks succeeds outgoing President Walt Davenport.

The board president runs the school board’s bimonthly meetings, acts as the spokesman for the board and authorizes documents on behalf of the board.

Dana Black was named vice president. Karen Yelsey was voted board clerk.
