Food drive seeks healthier items

Share

“Healthy Food Drive” in Irvine is now accepting donated food items to benefit those in need.

Organized by the city and the Second Harvest Food Bank, volunteers will accept all items, but ask for healthier alternatives when possible, such as canned fruits, juices, soups, vegetables, proteins and meats.

Everyday items, such as rice, cereal and peanut butter are always appreciated as well. City spokesman Craig Reem said the goal is to collect 10,000 pounds of canned foods.

Besides Second Harvest and Irvine, many other nonprofits are involved in the food drive, which will go to impoverished families and seniors.

The following organizations are also participating: AIDS Service Foundation, Christian Mission Alliance Bethel Korean Church, Christian Outreach Center, Families Forward, Illuminations Foundation, Mariners Church, St. Thomas More Church and St. Elizabeth Ann Setan Church.

The “Healthy Food Drive” will run through Jan. 15. Anyone interested is urged to look for donation barrels at city facilities from 8a.m. to 5p.m. For a list of locations, visit cityofirvine.org and more information about the drive, call Second Harvest Food Bank at (949) 653-2900.
