Mustaches, money and men’s health

A group of Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high school alumni have teamed up to raise funds for Movember, the international initiative that promotes men’s health awareness.

Through Dec. 1, the 17 guys of team Our Pleasure are growing out their mustaches to start dialogues with curious onlookers about more serious topics such as prostate and testicular cancer.

In three weeks, they’ve raised more than $28,000 — including a $20,000 sponsorship from First Team Real Estate — which puts them in ninth place for fundraising nationally.

Our Pleasure is having an event 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Blue Beet, 107 21st Place, Newport Beach. They’ll be guest bartending and putting all their gratuities toward the Movember effort.

Meanwhile, as of Friday afternoon, two other Movember teams from Newport Beach — Team Nuclear and Mown It — have raised $129,730 and $9,437, respectively.

Team Nuclear’s 180 members, who hail from throughout the country, have remained No. 1 in fundraising among the more than 14,000 American Movember teams. The men, led by Newport resident and Estancia High School alumnus “Coach” John Cornuke, have also surpassed their initial fundraising goal of $125,000.
