Longtime Newport Beach Police Capt. Dale Johnson was a finalist for an out-of-state police chief position, officials said Wednesday.

Johnson was up for the job in the Town of Marana, Ariz., Marana city officials said.

Johnson is the Newport Police Department’s Patrol and Traffic Division commander. He has been with the city since 1987 and a captain since 2008.

He was one of three finalists looking to replace Marana’s outgoing chief, who has been on the job since 2008.
