Cancer families to make ‘Great Escape’
Some Southland families will get a special treat Saturday, thanks to the ingenuity of a couple of Newport Beach businessmen.
Northwestern Mutual Financial Advisor Paul Glowienke and Financial Representative Nate Fikse are giving 40 families a “Great Escape” this weekend from dealing with the struggles of pediatric cancer.

They teamed up with Starlight Children’s Foundation to come up with the day spent at the UCLA vs. Stanford game at the Rose Bowl.
Children with pediatric cancer and their families will be treated to VIP-style tailgating, hobnobbing with former football players and a catered meal. In addition to seats to watch the big game, families will get on-field access to meet UCLA coaches and players.
“The Bruins have a valid opportunity to end up in the Rose Bowl; it’s going to be a very exciting day,” Glowienke said.
Fikse, a former UCLA punter and kicker, and Glowienke, also an alumnus, said the day will be an opportunity for families struggling financially, emotionally and medically to take a break and enjoy each other.
“That family typically doesn’t plan a day to go to Disneyland or go to a baseball game or football game — the normal family things to do,” Glowienke said. “The Great Escape is allowing them to set all that aside.”
