Kindergartners give thanks as they feast
Kindergartners celebrated Thanksgiving at Adams Elementary School on Tuesday.
Students chowed down on all the traditional fixings during the three kindergarten classes’ annual Thanksgiving Feast.
“We’ve been preparing for turkey time for weeks,” said teacher Robyn Reese. “We do this every year as an annual tradition to teach the children about the Thanksgiving traditions, community and sharing.”
Genesis, 4, and her mother, Erika Silva, agreed that Thanksgiving is about sharing with all types of people.
“I think it’s incredible that they start teaching them to share and interact and that people can be together no matter what race or color,” Silva said.
Sharing wasn’t hard with so much food to go around.
Students noshed on corn bread, rolls, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans and the all-important turkey.
Parent Diedre Stary, who volunteered her time despite no longer having kindergartners, dished up warm turkey out of a crock pot to the students.
The feast was made by the parents as well as Marie Callender’s and Boston Market, which donated cooked turkeys.
The parents went all out for dessert too with 18 apple and pumpkin pies, 10 cans of whipped cream and various other goodies.
“I like pumpkin pie,” Lizbeth Jiminez, 5, said as she waited in line.
“Me too, but with no whip cream,” added Zack Wiesenberg, 5.
The feast started with two songs by the kindergartners dresses up in character: turkeys with brown paper wings and colorful, feathered headdresses; pilgrims in black paper hats and white paper bonnets and aprons; and Native Americans in vests cut out of brown paper bags and colored headdresses.
“We are thankful for our friends,” the students sang. “On Thanksgiving Day, we are here to say ‘Thank you. Thank you.’”
Karina Salinas, 5, said the singing was fun because she likes to be thankful, especially for all her peers. Her friend Crystal Rodriguez, 5, agreed.
“I am thankful for my family,” Crystal said.
“I am thankful for my teacher,” Karina added.
