Rob Machado film to screen at Hurley on Friday

COSTA MESA — U.S. Open of Surfing winner Rob Machado on Friday will host a 7 p.m. screening of his most recent film, “Melali: The Drifter Sessions,” accompanied by his band at the Hurley Headquarters in Costa Mesa.

The film follows his 2009 big screen debut in “The Drifter,” which told the story of the nomadic, solitary lifestyle of a surfer through Machado’s travels searching for the perfect wave.

His second film came out in July and focuses on the best surf sessions taken during the filming of “The Drifter,” many of which ended up on the cutting room floor.

Instead of a story, the film offers an action-packed visual experience that will excite the surf community.

“This is more of a pure surf film,” Machado said in a statement. “We had so many great sessions during that year-long period filming “The Drifter,” we could have made a few movies out of it. ‘Melali’ represents the best them.”

The movie will serve as a backdrop, with the audio off, as the band plays.

Among the surf pros in the film are Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater, Kalani Robb, Dan Malloy and Marlon Gerber.

The event kicks off a spring tour of “Melali.”
