‘Endless Summer’ artist to visit South Coast Plaza

COSTA MESA — The man whose artwork symbolized the Southern California surfing culture of the 1960s plans to visit South Coast Plaza.

John Van Hamersveld, artist behind the iconic, color-saturated “Endless Summer” movie poster of an Orange County sunset, will make an appearance at the Surfing Heritage Museum this month.

The image of surfers on the sand, carrying their long boards atop their heads with the blazing fluorescent sun in the background, reminds local surfers of the time and travelling surf culture celebrated in the movie.

He also designed album covers for the Beatles (“Magical Mystery Tour”) and the Rolling Stones (“Exile on Main Street”) and concert posters for Jimi Hendrix and others.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 27, Hamersveld will sign copies of his new book, “My Art, My Life.”
