A man found engulfed in flames in a Costa Mesa parking lot has been identified by the Orange County coroner as Randy Hansen, 49.

Hansen died at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana on Monday morning.

Witnesses in the 2200 block of Newport Boulevard spotted him on fire near his white truck about 5 p.m. Sunday, according to Costa Mesa police.

Those at the scene tried putting out the flames using their shirts before someone arrived with a fire extinguisher and doused the fire, police said.

Police discovered a red plastic gas container and a lighter near the truck and damage on the passenger side. It was unclear whether the incident was accidental or possible arson that got out of control.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call Sgt. Ed Everett at (714) 754-5395 or Det. David Casarez (714) 754-5157.
