Whitman visits Costa Mesa

COSTA MESA — Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman stopped off at her campaign office here Monday — one of several stops on the eve of the election.

“We’re going to win this thing,” she told a crowd of about 70 supporters at the Paularino Avenue office during her brief visit. “I’m going to win this, [U.S. Senate candidate] Carly Fiorina is going to win this, and we’re going to bring a lot of Republicans with us.”

The latest polls, however, show Democrat Jerry Brown leading Whitman in the race for California’s next governor and Sen. Barbara Boxer ahead of Fiorina.

As she walked through a short hallway in the office, which she had opened earlier this year as her Orange County headquarters, the crowd cheered Whitman on.

“Go, Meg, go,” her supporters chanted.

Rep. John Campbell (R-Irvine), who greeted Whitman, told her supporters that the former eBay chief was going to revive California’s reputation for opportunities, growth and discovery.

Whitman told her supporters that this election is in their hands.

She gave a shoutout to state Sen. Mimi Walters (R-Laguna Hills), a candidate for state treasurer who was also at the Costa Mesa office, saying her win would create a huge upset.

Before leaving for her next campaign stop, Whitman autographed signs, posed for pictures with supporters and volunteers, and made a few calls in hopes of getting people at home to come out Tuesday to vote for her.

She also left voicemails reminding voters of their polling sites and letting them know that she’s counting on them.

“This is not a robo call,” she said to a woman on the phone. “It’s really me.”
