Doctor hopes to advance pediatric cardiac care

A doctor who grew up in Newport Beach is now contributing his talents with pediatric cardiothoracic surgery in San Francisco.

After spending 10 years at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington, Dr. Gordon A. Cohen was appointed in the summer as chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and chief of strategic program development at UC San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Cohen said he is excited to help advance the pediatric cardiothoracic program at UCSF, and hopes to create a heart failure transplant program for children.

He said that heart defects are the most common birth defects and about one out of 100 babies are born with a heart condition that needs to be operated on.

“I’m hoping to really advance pediatric cardiac care in the Northern California region and hope to have its influence grow to the entire United States,” Cohen said. “I hope to make this center one of the top five pediatric heart centers in the country.”
