Komen race brings in $2.7M so far

At least $2.7 million was raised during the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure, according to preliminary results released Monday.

The race attracted more than 30,000 advocates, supporters and survivors to the Pacific Life building, near Fashion Island, in Newport Beach. Each shared a common goal: to never let breast cancer take away mothers from their children, family members or loved ones.

Fundraising for the event will continue until Oct. 31 in hopes of reaching the $3.1-million goal, according to a news release. The last day of October is also the deadline for race participants to turn in their pledges and matching employer donations.

About 75% of the money raised will go toward educational program and local medical services. The remainder goes toward the Komen Award and Research Grant Program to search for a cure.

Though race weekend was a financial success, someone broke into three cars in the Corona del Mar High School parking lot during the race, making off with $2,709 in items from five people, according to the Corona del Mar Today website.
