Police officer hit on Newport Boulevard

COSTA MESA — A Costa Mesa police officer suffered minor injuries Thursday morning when his patrol car was broadsided on Newport Boulevard, officials said.

The officer was northbound at about 7:45 a.m. when he passed through the Wilson Street intersection and was hit by an eastbound car that ran the red light, Lt. Mark Manley said.

The officer was not responding to a call at the time.

The officer, who officials did not immediately identify, had complaints of pain and was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.

“He should be OK,” Manley said. The driver of the other car was uninjured, police said.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash instead of Costa Mesa police, as is routine in cases like this, to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
