Costa Mesa Olympians get the street treatment

If Costa Mesa were a nation, it would have placed about 63rd in the overall medal count in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Two medalists who call the city their hometown were honored at City Hall on Tuesday, along with other Olympians and coaches.

Beach volleyball stars Misty May-Treanor, a three-time gold medalist, and April Ross, a 2012 silver medalist, grew up in Costa Mesa and attended Newport Harbor High School.

Heptathlete Sharon Day and beach volleyball player Jake Gibb were also recognized. Day is a Costa Mesa native who graduated from Costa Mesa High School. Gibb lives in Costa Mesa.

Faux street signs named after each recipient — such as Misty May-Treanor Court and Sharon Day Way — were also awarded. Days in September were also named in their honor.

Gymnast Kyla Ross, a gold medalist who trains in Costa Mesa, was absent because of a TV filming, city CEO Tom Hatch said.

“I’m just trying to catch up on life,” May-Treanor said before the ceremony.
