A 65-year-old Irvine man involved in a cycling accident along Newport Coast Drive earlier this month has died, police confirmed Tuesday.

Dan Crain was injured at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 3 when his bicycle collided with a Land Rover on the far right lane, where the Corona del Mar (73) Freeway merges with the southbound lanes of Newport Coast Drive, said Sgt. Steve Burdette of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Crain was transported to Mission Hospital shortly after the accident.

He was able to give a statement and showed good recollection of the incident, Burdette said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Burdette said.

Although an investigation is still ongoing, it appears Crane had attempted to cross over to the farthest right lane when he was struck from behind, Burdette said.

The driver was going about 45 mph and unable to stop.

No charges have been filed related to the crash.
