A Newport Beach couple received an honor earlier this month for their philanthropy with the Starkey Hearing Foundation.

The foundation gave Glenn and Mindy Stearns the American Couple of the Year Award on Aug. 4 at the 12th annual So the World May Hear gala in St. Paul, Minn.

The event, which brought together dozens of celebrity guests and VIP supporters, including President Bill Clinton and actor Robin Williams, raised $7.6 million — the most since the first event in 2001, according to a news release.

“We were privileged to attend one of the Starkey Hearing missions,” Glenn Stearns said. “We witnessed an amazing team creating mini-miracles one after another. It was a profound and life-changing experience. To be recognized by an organization that is making such an enormous impact on the world is an incredible honor.”

Mindy Stearns added, “The Starkey Hearing Foundation brings the world together and celebrates how we all help each other, and we love being a part of such an incredible global community.”

In the past, the Stearns have donated to Costa Mesa’s Girls Inc., the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, the Boys & Girls Clubs and theMake-A-Wish Foundation, among others. They also serve on the boards of many nonprofit organizations.

They also competed on “The Real Gilligan’s Island” television show and, after winning, matched and donated all their winnings to local charities.

“There are so many heroes in our lives and this [Couple of the Year] award celebrates every hero in our own lives,” Mindy Stearns said. “We wouldn’t make the impact we do without others.”
