A trim can boost Harbor’s ASB budget

As Tala Teaupa got his haircut at the Matador Alcove, he was not only donating to Locks of Love to commemorate family members, but he was also kick-starting an upcoming fundraiser for his high school.

Patty Zimmerman, owner of Matador Alcove and Shanghai Hair Salon, and her staff will host its first “cut-a-thon” Sept. 16. All proceeds will go toward the Newport Harbor High School Associated Student Body.

“My family is third generation from Newport Harbor,” Zimmerman said. “They have been great to us.”

Zimmerman, who has done hair in the Newport-Mesa area for 30 years, said the salons’ staffs chose to donate to Harbor because of their close connection with the students.

“We know a lot of the kids and athletes,” she said. “It’s nice to give back to the kids. I watched them grow up.”

One of the kids Zimmerman watched grow up was Konner Speth, 17, Harbor’s ASB president and a Shanghai Hair Salon customer for about five years.

“I like that we’re donating to ASB because the money is going to go to all of the kids to help them, and not just one organization or sports team,” Zimmerman said.

Together, Zimmerman and Konner are aiming for a successful event, with Konner promoting the event.

“I’m really proud of Konner,” Zimmerman said. “She’s heading this really well.”

Along with the cut-a-thon, Konner organized for TK Burgers to provide a food truck at the event, as well as live music.

The event will be haircuts only, with no blow-drying or styling, in order to take in as many clients as possible. Haircuts for males will start at $20, while haircuts for females will start at $35.

Zimmerman said the salons will also donate 10% of the day’s retail sales to the ASB, and there will be a raffle at the end of the day with gift card prizes.

Zimmerman recommends that interested clients book ahead of time.
