Sonic headed for Harbor Blvd.

COSTA MESA — A Sonic Drive-In is set to open at at 3095 Harbor Blvd., replacing Long John Silver’s, a fast-food fixture for several years.

“We have entered into an agreement with Sonic Burger, and we’re excited to have them,” said Bill Lang, who manages the property for the Harbor Mesa Partners. “It’ll be exciting for the community. It’s going to be a great addition.”

Lang would not say why Long John Silver’s, which sits on the northwest corner of Harbor Boulevard and Nutmeg Place, was replaced with Sonic. Attempts to reach the owner of the seafood franchise and its parent company, Louisville, Ky.-based Yum! Brands, were unsuccessful.

Long John Silver’s manager, Francisco Mendoza, said he wasn’t sure if his restaurant will close and that he’s aware of Oklahoma City-based Sonic Burger’s application to open in Costa Mesa. He had no further information.

The city approved the conditional-use permit for the eatery in June, but a permit application hasn’t been submitted yet, said Minoo Ashabi, city senior planner.

Ashabi said Sonic plans to submit an application soon.

“I talked to the applicant today, he’s going to submit something very soon,” she said.

Once the building review is complete, which would take about two months, the city will issue its permit for Sonic to begin construction.
