A UC Irvine professor of public health was recognized in England this week by international education groups for his leadership in making the university’s courses and course materials free and public.

Professor Oladele Ogunseitan, the founding chairman of the department of population health and disease prevention at UCI, was honored with the OpenCourseWare Leadership Excellence Award by the OpenCourseWare Consortium for increasing the status of the university’s free and open education site, according to a news release.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition from the consortium,” Ogunseitan said in the release. “It’s important that more colleges and universities embrace this movement and add their courses and lectures to the consortium’s catalog to increase access to higher education around the world.”

The consortium is a collaboration of more than 250 higher education institutions and associated organizations around the globe to advance learning by sharing educational material.

Ogunseitan has served as the co-director of the UCI Framework Program in global health since 2009, and also serves as the director of research education, training and career development for Clinical and Translational Science funded by the National Institutes of Health.
