Newport home targeted in marijuana raid

Orange County sheriff’s deputies this week raided a Newport Beach home and a pot café in Lake Forest, looking for marijuana and other possible contraband.

It was the second time in five weeks that authorities searched the home in the 1600 block of West Balboa Boulevard, and the third time in sixth months they raided Charles Café at Lake Forest and Dimension drives.

Deputies found nine pounds of marijuana, a handgun, 206 brownies and other baked goods laced with pot, as well as two grams of hashish and about $2,000, according to Lt. Doug Doyle.

No arrests were made, he said.

It’s the same group of people as before, as well as a few others, he said.

“I can’t speak for them — why they keep doing it,” Doyle said. “I don’t know what’s going on with those guys.”

The operators are operating outside the bounds of the state’s Compassionate Use Act, Doyle said.

Sheriff’s deputies raided Charles Café in March, and federal agents did the same last November.

In March, Patch.com reported, deputies arrested Even Chan, 38, of Irvine, who they thought was the owner of the cafe, and Kalvin Tsui, 25, of Monterey Park, who was said to be the manager.

Neither has been charged with any crime in Orange County Superior Court.
