A man who appeared to be driving the wrong way on Newport Boulevard caused a three-car crash that sent him to the hospital, police said.

The driver of a red Toyota Yaris was in the northbound lanes of Newport Boulevard heading south about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

The Yaris crashed into a pickup truck, which another car then rear-ended, Lowe said.

The driver of the Yaris sustained serious injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. His condition was unknown Monday morning, according to Lowe.
