Pot brownie sickens 7 children

Seven Costa Mesa sixth-graders were taken to the hospital Tuesday after sharing a marijuana-laced brownie, authorities said.

A boy brought the brownie to Pomona Elementary School, and some students reported difficulty breathing and feeling nauseous after eating it, according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Seguin.

The boy gave friends some of the pastry in the school library and on the playground, Seguin said.

None of the other children, who ranged in age from 10 to 12, knew the brownie contained marijuana until one asked why it didn’t taste like an ordinary brownie, according to Seguin.

The six boys and one girl were treated at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach for non-life threatening injuries and then released to their parents, authorities said.

“Luckily, all seven of the students who were taken to the hospital are going to be OK,” Pomona Principal Megan Brown said in an email to parents.

Costa Mesa police detectives were investigating.

In her email, Brown notified parents that counselors would be on campus Wednesday and Thursday. Brown also noted that a meeting with parents on drug use will be scheduled the upcoming weeks.

She urged parents to keep confidential the names of the children involved.
