Officers revive man in McDonald’s drive-thru

Newport Beach police officers got a man’s heart beating again after he was found unresponsive after a minor car accident in a McDonald’s drive-thru, police said Monday.

Police received a call at 9 p.m. Sunday about a crash at the McDonald’s at 700 W. Coast Hwy.

When they arrived, they found a vehicle at the end of the drive-thru, where it had crashed into a parked vehicle, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

Officer Robert Bennett couldn’t detect a pulse on the middle-aged man’s wrist or neck. At that time, Bennett said, he and Sgt. Rachel Johnson pulled the man from his vehicle.

Officer Monica Tiscareno placed a jacket under the man’s head so his head didn’t have to rest on the concrete while they worked to save his life, Bennett said.

The sergeant grabbed a defibrillator from a patrol car and used it once to provide a jolt of electricity to the victim. The officers then performed CPR on the man while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

When paramedics got there, the man had a pulse but remained unconscious, Bennett said.

The department credited a March 2004 community donation for the acquisition of the defibrillators, now in all patrol vehicles and providing officers with lifesaving tools.

Firefighters took the man, who police said was possibly in his late 50s, to an area hospital. He was expected to survive.
