UCI: It was an intervention

UC Irvine officials have determined that eyewitness accounts of a woman’s possible kidnapping from a UCI parking lot Friday morning were unfounded because the incident turned out to be a family intervention.

Campus police had issued an alert about a possible abduction, after witnesses reported seeing two men pull a woman into a white Chevy Astrovan in the No. 6 Parking Lot, near West Peltason Drive and Academy Way, then drive off sometime after 11 a.m.

After finding the van about 2 p.m., police determined that it was a case of family intervention, UCI spokesman Tom Vasich said in an e-mail. The woman was a UCI employee, he said.

As of Friday afternoon, she was receiving medical care at an area hospital, and no arrests would be made as UCI police now considered this “a family matter,” Vasich said.
