60th anniversary plans move forward

Costa Mesa’s 60th anniversary celebration now has a slogan and at least one scheduled date.

The festivities for “60 & Fabulous” are planned for throughout the year, but from June 28 to 30, Fair Drive from City Hall to Fairview Road is tentatively scheduled to closed down for a kick-off festival replete with music, food and art, said city spokesman Bill Lobdell.

The city is also negotiating to use some of the Orange County Fairgrounds’ parking lot, he said.

Other staple Costa Mesa community events — such as the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions-run Fish Fry and Carnival from May 31 to June 2, and Costa Mesa Community Run, an annual benefit for city schools, June 2 — may somehow incorporate the 60th anniversary.

The 60th Anniversary Planning Committee met weekly through January, but now meets every other week. Its various subcommittees still gather on a regular basis, Lobdell said.

The committee is still seeking volunteers to help with the festivities. For more information, contact Christine Cordon with the city at christine.cordon@costamesaca.gov or (714) 754-5121.

In addition, the celebration has acquired an original logo through LogoSauce.com, a crowd-sourcing website.

Graphic artist Ezequiel Gomez of New Haven., Conn., had the winning entry. The 60th anniversary committee’s marketing team unanimously chose Gomez’s submission.

“When I read about Costa Mesa’s history, what came to my attention was the surf industry part,” Gomez said in a prepared statement. “Surf logos are pretty cool and chill — they have soul — so my intention was to make a symbol which could contain and represents all the best of Costa Mesa.

“At the beginning I tried to do this with a square shape, but I thought, ‘You can’t have magic if you think so square,’ so I decided to use a circular shape and add some magic twisting the letters.”
