Daily Pilot will remain free online

Share

The Los Angeles Times’ announcement Friday that it would start charging for full access to its website will not affect the Daily Pilot or other newspapers in the company’s community news division.

Starting March 5, readers who do not subscribe to The Times’ print edition will be asked to buy an online subscription. Those who don’t will be able to read 15 stories in a 30-day period for free.

The move, however, will not affect the websites for titles under the Times Community News division of the company: the Daily Pilot, the Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot, the Huntington Beach Independent, O.C. Now, or the titles in Los Angeles County.

“Readers looking for news about Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Irvine will not notice any changes at DailyPilot.com,” said John Canalis, editor of Times Community News, South. “They will still be able to access our proprietary content for free on our website as well as on Facebook and Twitter.”

The Times is calling its plan a “membership” that, in addition to unfettered access to digital news content, will include retail discounts, deals and giveaways.

The initial online subscription rate will be 99 cents for four weeks. Afterward, unlimited digital access will be $3.99 per week. Other packages will also be offered, including $1.99 for digital access and the Sunday print edition.

Times subscribers in Orange County will also receive the newspaper’s new features section, Saturday, which will focus on home, living and health.
