19 apply for vacant sanitary seat
Nineteen applicants are vying for the Costa Mesa Sanitary District seat left vacant since Director Jim Fitzpatrick’s resignation.
The district’s four directors are scheduled to review the 19 applications during a special meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the district’s headquarters, 628 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa.
Arlene Schafer, whom Fitzpatrick defeated when he was elected, is applying to recpature the seat she held for 16 years.
The other applicants, all residents within the district’s service area, are:
•Tamara Allee, a civil engineer and substitute teacher;
•Shivaji Deshmukh, assistant general manager of the West Basin Municipal Water District in Carson;
•Linda Dixon, an independent fundraising consultant;
•Paul Flanagan, a retired doctor;
•Tom Graham, a retired consumer electronics executive;
•Jeffrey Harlan, a Daily Pilot columnist and urban planner;
•Mike Harmanos, an online marketing consultant;
•Don Harper, a city parks commissioner and business developer/credit officer;
•Mark Harris, a retired utilities equipment specialist with the city of Newport Beach;
•Richard Kapko, a certified public accountant;
•Jim Konves, a retired water maintenance supervisor with the Irvine Ranch Water District;
•Lisa Manfredi, a businesswoman;
•Al Morelli, a consultant and engineering professor;
•Darrell Neft, an electrical engineer;
•Jerry Totman, a marketing consultant;
•Russell VanDegrift, a government compliance/management professional;
•Dan Worthington, who served on the Sanitary District for 12 years; and Jonathan Zich, a civil engineer.
District officials have said they hope to have the appointment process finished by the end of the month.
The chosen person will serve until December 2014, the remainder of Fitzpatrick’s term. The directors receive a $221 stipend for service day, with a maximum of six per month.
Fitzpatrick resigned Jan. 14 while facing a lawsuit from his Sanitary District colleagues. They had contended that him serving on both the district and Costa Mesa Planning Commission from December 2010 to May 2012 was incompatible.
Fitzpatrick has since reapplied for the Planning Commission, whose members are appointed by the City Council.
