CSULB hosting meeting on proposed transfer changes
Cal State Long Beach — a common transfer school for the area’s community college students — is considering tightening up its admissions guidelines for freshmen and transfer students to put emphasis on those who are prepared for their majors.
The Coast Community College District is hosting a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 in the district boardroom, 1370 Adams Ave. in Costa Mesa, on the proposed changes for fall 2013 that would increase the number of graduates and shorten the time it takes students to earn their degrees.
Many students from Orange Coast, Coastline and Golden West colleges transfer to CSULB.
“Given the challenges that our students face today in gaining transfer to the California State University system, it is important that they have the chance to learn about CSULB’s proposal so they can make informed decisions on their educational futures,” Jim Moreno, president of the Coast Community College District board of trustees, said in a prepared statement.
The proposed guidelines would implement specific criteria for each major and focus on students with a “reasonable or better likelihood of degree completion in their chosen major,” according to the draft proposal.
The changes come in response to increased interest in the university as budget cuts have come down from Sacramento. CSULB received 76,600 undergraduate applications for fall 2012 — the most in the 23-campus CSU system — for 7,000 to 8,000 spots.
The public hearing is the first of three CSULB is hosting on the subject. There will also be public hearings at 3 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Barrett Athletic Administration Center at CSULB, 1250 Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach.
The final hearing will be at 2 p.m. March 7 in the boardroom at Long Beach City College, 4901 E. Carson St., Long Beach.
