Man dies in crash on Costa Mesa interchange

COSTA MESA — A 72-year-old driver was killed when his pickup truck crashed into a tree Sunday afternoon on a Costa Mesa freeway, the California Highway Patrol confirmed.

Robert Decker, of Orange, was driving southbound on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway and maneuvering onto the southbound Corona del Mar (73) Freeway connector about 1:40 p.m. Sunday, when his 2007 Ford pickup drove over the embankment and crashed into a tree, CHP spokesman Officer John Patterson said Monday.

Decker was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where he died of his injuries.

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the accident, Patterson said.
