COSTA MESA — A Costa Mesa firefighter was injured and transported to an area hospital after a fire broke out Thursday afternoon in a city-owner storage facility across the street from Estancia High School.

Fire crews responded at 2:53 p.m. to a call in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue, where a fire was burning in a building believed to be used for storing fertilizer, said Barbara Marcosa, spokeswoman for the Costa Mesa Fire Department. She said the burning building was near Fire Station No. 4.

City firefighters and emergency crews from Fountain Valley and Newport Beach were able to contain much of the fire within 20 minutes, extinguishing the flames by 3:45 p.m., Marcosa said.

The only injury reported was a minor one to a firefighter, said Marcosa, who did not say which hospital the firefighter was transported to.

The streets surrounding the building were reopened to traffic at 3:47 p.m., she said.
