Police warn residents after multiple vehicle burglaries

In response to multiple vehicle burglaries, Newport Beach police recently distributed door hangers in the Upper Newport Bay area alerting residents to the problem.

The seven burglaries happened between Dec. 1 and Jan. 7 near University Drive and Irvine Avenue around the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and the YMCA, according to police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

In response, police volunteers handed out door hangers that read, “This alert is to inform you that a car burglar is operating in your neighborhood.” It encourages residents to lock all vehicle doors, activate car alarms and park in well-lighted areas.

Four of the targeted vehicles were left unlocked, Lowe said.

A window was smashed to gain entry in the remaining three incidents; those vehicles had valuables left in plain sight.

All but one incident happened overnight, with one happening between 6 and 9 a.m., according to Lowe.
