COSTA MESA — A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a near-fatal shooting at a Costa Mesa inn, an incident that investigators say could lead to attempted murder charges.

The shooting started in a first-floor motel room at Costa Mesa Motor Inn and spilled out into the parking lot, with blood and bullet casings lying along the path, said Costa Mesa Lt. Paul Dondero. Four to five people were involved in the incident that led up to the gunfire, Sgt. Ed Everett said.

The victim, an unidentified man, was shot twice at the 2277 Harbor Blvd. motel, police said. A maroon Jeep Grand Cherokee was also hit.

After the shooting, one man had been arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and one woman had been detained, according to police. Their identities were not released.

Police said a motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but officials indicated the incident could have been drug related.

Dondero added that it’s not clear if the victim was the intended target or if he was hit by a stray bullet. Detectives found the gun they believed was used in the shooting.

Police found the victim in the parking lot driveway waving down police. Motel guests called authorities.

The victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. He was said to be in stable condition after surgery, Everett said.
