Leaders chosen for anniversary committee
Two residents who will lead the Costa Mesa 60th Anniversary Planning Committee were selected this past week.
Mike Scheafer and Melinda Lowery were chosen during the committee’s meeting Thursday night as chairman and vice chairwoman, respectively.
Scheafer, a board member for the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, is also active with Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club and has chaired its annual Fish Fry in recent years. He has lived in Costa Mesa since 1958.
“Costa Mesa is in my blood, and I have served this community in many ways,” he wrote in his application. “I would relish the opportunity to continue to serve in this capacity.”
For the past four years, Lowery has served on the city’s Historical Preservation Committee.
“I am thrilled that Costa Mesa is a city where its people care about and try to preserve as much of the history as is possible,” Lowery wrote in her application. “I have learned so much and am honored to be able to share with the whole city.”
Various subcommittees were also approved. They include ones for marketing and advertising, community events, sustainability, education and fundraising.
The city has also set up an online discussion board where people can submit their ideas or comment on others. A link to the discussion board is on the city’s website, https://www.costamesaca.gov.
The committee will plan Costa Mesa’s activities that celebrate the 60th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. Committee members include a wide variety of Costa Mesa stakeholders, including residents, politicians and local businesses.
Costa Mesa officials have allotted some city funds for the celebration, and will help in aspects like acquiring permits and financial matters.
The committee’s next meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Emergency Operations Center, next to the Police Department headquarters, at 99 Fair Drive.
