Share

The city of Newport Beach and Goodwill of Orange County will take your e-waste, free of charge, at a collection event Jan. 19.

Community members can bring unwanted electronics to Mariners Elementary School, 2100 Mariners Drive, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Items that will be accepted include working and broken computers, cell phones, fax machines, stereo equipment, dry ink toner cartridges, microwaves and televisions.

FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version listed the wrong phone number for the city of Newport Beach’s Municipal Operations Department. The correct number is (949) 644-3055.

Such items contain toxic substances that are harmful to the environment and can pollute groundwater, so it’s illegal to throw them in with other trash.

However, some items that could release hazardous fumes or liquids won’t be accepted. These include batteries of any size, electronic white boards, X-ray equipment and large, floor-model copy machines.

Newport Beach residents have brought more than 350,000 pounds of e-waste since the city’s first collection event in 2008.

For more information, including a complete list of the items that will or won’t be accepted at the event, call the city’s Municipal Operations Department at (949) 644-3055.
