Community and Clubs: Update on the Costa Mesa Kiwanis
I attended the luncheon meeting of the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club Thursday as club President Ken Dilley presented a $525 check to Costa Mesa Fire Department Community Education Officer Brenda Emrick and Fire Chief Kirk Dominic to help fund emergency-preparedness efforts and Team Fire Force for teenagers. Dominic is home-grown, having graduated from Costa Mesa High School in 1979, and has spent 23 years in the Costa Mesa Fire Department before his appointment six weeks ago as chief.
The club is busy as ever! Several weeks ago, it hosted a pancake breakfast for the American Youth Soccer Organization.
On Oct. 29, members worked the Halloween carnival at the Boys & Girls that also involved Key Club members. On Oct. 30, members worked the pumpkin patch at the Orange County Rail Way Engineers site, serving some 80 families.
This past weekend, Jeff Dimsdale and 30 Orange Coast College Circle K members went to a leadership weekend in Sonoma.
Nov. 20-21 they will be selling ice cream at the Orange County Fairgrounds swap meet. In December, they plan to host a holiday party for children from the Boys & Girls Club as Mesa Verde United Methodist Church.

COMPUTER FRIENDS OF OASIS
The Computer Friends of OASIS Senior Center meets Wednesday, and the topic will be “GPS Systems — Never Get Lost Again.”
“GPS systems are now affordable and invaluable,” according to the program. “You will learn what types of GPS systems are on the market and the advantages of the different features available. The speaker will be Brian Richardson, president of Richardson IT Services.”
The speaker will be followed by Randy Langel, the club’s computer expert, who will answer questions and comment on the latest developments in computer technology and the Internet. The fee is $2 and all are welcome. The center is at 801 Narcissus Ave., Corona del Mar.

GLIDER PILOT STORY
In honor of Veterans Day, the Costa Mesa Historical Society will present its annual salute to our veterans with speaker Capt. Robert “Bob” Meyer, U.S .Army Air Corps, on Nov. 21. The topic is “Down and Go – The Story of WWII Glider Pilots.” On active duty from 1942 to 1945, Meyer received numerous decorations after landing for so-called “suicide missions” in Normandy, southern France, Holland and the Rhine. He is a member of the Freedom Committee of Orange County, whose members speak to high school students and civic groups to bring “living history” into the classroom and instill a sense of patriotism in future generations.
