Communities & Clubs: Scouts to organize O.C. food drive
Both the Boy and Girl Scouts have been delivering door hangers announcing the Nov. 6 food drive. Last year, 140,000 pounds of food was collected for distribution by Second Harvest Food Bank, according to Lane Calvert, scout executive. On Saturday, the Scouts will be back, picking up the sacks of donated food which will be taken to a collection site at 801 Dover Drive, Newport Beach, where Rotarians, Interact Club members and other volunteers will pack them into a semitrailer for delivery to Second Harvest. Donations may also be dropped off at Albertsons grocery stores on Saturday. For more information, call (949) 653-2900.
Hearts and hands
The Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council presents the 10th Annual Hearts & Hands, a hands-on day of community Service on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Latter-day Saints church, 881 Dover Drive in Newport Beach, according to Jaimie Day, the event chair. The 2010 theme is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” preparing ourselves and our neighborhoods to be self-sufficient in emergencies.
Congregations, service clubs and youth groups are invited to participate in a day of service with more than a dozen projects scheduled to be completed for the local community and around the world. There will also be a CPR class and blood drive for which reservations can be made at learncpr@me.com. A special effort will be made to send letters and packages to our troops overseas to show our gratitude for their service. Students and Scouts can earn service credit hours, and lunch will be served by local firefighters with the proceeds going to charity.
