Community & Clubs: Helping children with sight and sounds

Share

The District 4L4 Lions Sight and Hearing van will be at all Newport-Mesa Unified Schools in the next two months to examine students’ hearing and eyesight. Chaired by Joan Parks of the Harbor Mesa Lions, members of all three Lions clubs in the area will deliver the van to local schools to enable campus nurses to screen the students. The van was recently refurbished and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Lions International has always focused on sight and hearing and the quest to prevent blindness. This project is just one example of the work that the organization does for communities. Clubs in the district raise funds for this project during the year with various events. For further information about the Harbor Mesa Lions, check out their website at nhcmlionsclub.com, or to learn about the Lions District go to district4l4.org.

A guest at a recent breakfast meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise was Megan MacDonald, who has just returned from Hurlingham, a suburb of Nairobi, Kenya. She was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in 2008-09 sponsored by the Rotary Club of Orange. She studied International Development in Kenya and was also involved in the Africa School project. Her plans are to continue her involvement in Rotary and Kenya.

Thought for the day

“When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want? Will you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be people. If relationships will matter most then, shouldn’t they matter most now?” - Max Lucado
