Community & Clubs: Helping clean up the bay
Dozens of members of the Rotary Clubs of Newport Balboa, Newport Beach Sunrise and Costa Mesa teamed up with Newport Beach firefighters Saturday to serve hamburgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, chips and soft drinks to nearly 800 volunteers who participated in the annual Back Bay Clean Up, according to Rotarian A.J. Thielen, who coordinated the event on behalf of the Newport Balboa Club. Food was provided out of two locations, Shell Maker Island and the University Drive Park, with leftovers taken to a soup kitchen in Costa Mesa.
Support Lions and Estancia Basketball
The Beach Pit BBQ, at 1676 Tustin Ave., Costa Mesa, is donating 15% of Wednesday and Thursday night dinner proceeds to the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club and Estancia High School Basketball program. Genealogy at OASIS Center
Computer Friends is a computer club dedicated to helping senior citizens learn computer basics while enriching their creative efforts through speakers, classes and social functions held at the OASIS Senior Center, 800 Marguerite Ave., Corona del Mar. “The Computer, the Internet and Genealogy” will be the topic of the club’s next meeting, at 1 p.m. Oct. 13. The speaker will be Hal Harrocks, who will introduce a computer program designed for genealogy and share what is available on the Internet to help in your family research. Hal has been doing family research for 15 years and is a member of the Assn. of Professional Genealogists, Genealogical Speakers Guild, and the Orange County California Genealogical Society. Harrocks will be followed by Randy Langel, the club’s computer expert, who will answer questions and comment on the latest developments in computer technology and the Internet. The fee is $2 and everyone is welcome.
Casino Night Silent Auction Offer Golf with TV Actor
The Harbor Mesa Lions “Wild West Casino Night” will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave. A special silent auction bid item will be “Play a round with Bobby Cobb,” who is played by actor Brian Van Holt on the ABC show “Cougar Town.” The round of golf with the actor will be for three people and will go to the person placing the highest bid.
Casino Night will feature gambling, music and dancing, theme basket prizes, $100 hat raffle and delicious chuckwagon food from the Newport Rib Co. Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased before the event. No tickets will be sold at the door. Funds raised will be donated to local charities.
