Community & Clubs: Lions donate supplies to first-grade students
Harbor Mesa Lions donated school boxes filled with all the supplies the first-graders at Whittier Elementary School will need throughout the year, according to Carol VanHolt. Teachers give the club a list of all the tools the children will be using in the classroom, such as rulers, scissors, pencils, glue, markers and crayons. The project is chaired by Amy Averbach, Myrta Sparkes, Dalila Vaden and Gina Stansbury, who buy the items and boxes. Members have an assembly day the week before school starts and distribute the boxes the following week. The children are delighted to receive these boxes and show their gratitude with big smiles and a thank you.
Funds for this annual project are raised with several events the club holds, including their Casino Night, Candy Sales, Bingo Night and the annual garage sale. For more information about the club, visit https://www.cmnhlions.com.
KIWANIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Melissa Olsen, a professional photographer, has assisted both the Irvine Kiwanis and the Costa Mesa Kiwanis clubs with our respective golf tournaments, said Costa Mesa President Kent Mueller.
“She has donated her time and talent to both the Irvine and Costa Mesa tournaments for well over eight years. She shoots pictures of our golfers at the first tee and prints them in time for review by the end of the day. She also has her staff put together a DVD to music that is also ready by the end of 18 holes and is playing in the clubhouse when the golfers come off the course!”
Charlie Markel, a member of both clubs introduced Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Joel Uranga, who presented our Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award to Melissa Olsen for her volunteer efforts on behalf of both clubs.
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AWARDS $100K FOR MYANMAR WATER PROJECT
Supporters and organizers of the Rotary Myanmar Water Project were thrilled to receive news Sept. 10 that a Rotary Foundation Special Initiatives Grant in the amount of $100,000 has been awarded for expansion and continuation of this life-changing program.
The Rotary Myanmar Water Project was founded by JT Warring of the Rotary Club of Newport Irvine. Warring has worked tirelessly over the last four years to raise funds for the construction of 20 water wells serving orphanages in Myanmar. This work has been especially challenging as there are no Rotary clubs in Myanmar, due to current political conditions. The project is a shining example of the ability of Rotarians to break through political and cultural barriers and accomplish humanitarian goals worldwide, said club President Junius Jaubert.
