Community & Clubs: Iraq war veteran to speak at meeting
On Wednesday, Iraq war veteran David Mayer is going to be at the general meeting of the American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291, along with his mother and father. He will speak about the organization he is establishing to build homes for veterans who have suffered debilitating injuries in the military, according to Jess Lawson, 3rd vice commander of Post 291.
Army Specialist Mayer was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when he lost both of his legs in an attack on his convoy on March 14, 2008. En route to a mission in Baghdad, Mayer’s vehicle was struck in Al-Hillah by an explosively formed penetrator, which caused him to be thrown into the gunner’s cage and be severely injured by shrapnel. Mayer and two other soldiers suffered serious injuries, leaving each of them as bilateral amputees. Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, Mayer was later transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. where he underwent therapies and treatments.
The Post 291 Honor Rifle Squad will escort Mayer to the podium. The General Meeting of American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the post, 215 15th St., Newport Beach.
New clergy luncheon
The Sept. 15 meeting of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council will welcome new clergy to the area. The program will feature Professor Bonnie Kent, who teaches philosophy at UC Irvine’s School of Humanities, speaking on “How Religion Should Respond to Changes in Ethics,” according to Greg Kelly, the council’s program co-chairman.
The annual New Clergy luncheon, which will begin with a reception at 11:45 a.m., will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, O’Donnell Hall, 1441 West Balboa Blvd., Newport Beach. Admission is free for all clergy new to Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach, while tickets for all others cost $10 with a reservation and $12 without a reservation.

The Oct. 13 Interfaith Council meeting will focus on resources for homeless and hungry in the three cities and will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at Dover and 16th Streets in Newport Beach, according to Rev. Julie Elkins, council president.
Lions spaghetti dinner fundraiser
The Harbor Mesa Lions will hold their 15th annual “Spaghetti Splash” dinner on Sept. 11, at the home of Mike and Ann McIlroy. The evening will include the “Italian Raffle” game and the ever popular singing of the de facto Italian national anthem, “That’s Amore.” Funds raised will help many organizations and the needy in the Harbor area. The event starts at 6 p.m. and the cost per person is $20. For further information, call (714) 641-0664.
Support the community emergency response team
“Please join us on Sept.14 at ECCO restaurant located At The Camp to raise funds for disaster supplies for the Costa Mesa Community Emergency Response Team and enjoy delicious fresh Italian cuisine,” states Patti Bass, a CERT coordinator. CERT members, their family and friends will dine at 6:30 p.m., according to Bass. Twenty percent of your dine-in or takeout food and beverage bill between the hours of 11 a.m. to midnight will go the CERT, if you mention CERT Fundraiser.
