Community & Clubs: Golfing to support Marines
The Sons of the American, Legion Post 291, are working with Costa Mesa resident and tournament Director Fred Arnold to promote the sixth annual Injured Marine Golf Benefit on Oct. 11 at the Costa Mesa Golf Course, 1701 Golf Course Drive.
“The sole benefactor of this charity fundraiser is the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund,” Arnold said.
The first five tournaments raised more than $200,000.
The event is more than a golf tournament with a dinner-dance at Post 291, 215 E. 15th St., Balboa, following the tournament at 5 p.m. There will also be a raffle and silent auction.
Individual golfer fees are $175 each; foursomes, $600; Tee Sign, $350; and Foursome and Tee Sign, $900. Registration, which is on a first-come first-served basis, is limited to 36 teams.

Pat Michaels will be missed
Longtime Harbor area resident Pat Michaels died last week and will be missed. Pat was one of those involved in community activities, in part because of his cable TV show on which community, civic and businesses leaders appeared.
Pat was oftentimes called on to be the master of ceremonies for charity events. I remember one year when he was the master of ceremonies for the annual Commodores Ball of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. The event took place at the Meridian Hotel. The commodores and their guests were in black tie, the women in formals. It was a good-looking group.
Well, Pat gaveled the meeting to order and called on me to provide the invocation. I waited for what seemed like minutes, but it was probably a few seconds for the audience to quiet down, then gave the invocation. The flag salute followed and then a few announcements before Pat announced dinner was to be served.
During dinner service, I got up and headed to the restroom, when a lady from the dinner who was doing the same, stopped me in the hallway and congratulated me for being the master of ceremonies for the event and trying to keep the audience under control.
She thought I was Pat. We both used to get accused of being the other person. We both were about the same size, had white hair, white mustaches and at that time, black horn-rimmed glasses. People use to ask me if they could appear on Pat’s cable TV show and he would get comments about the school district being directed to me, a school board member.
Pat, I am going to miss you, your humor and involvement in the community. Condolences from Barbara and me to Paula and the family.
