Community & Clubs: Children get shopping trip
The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa on Aug. 14 sponsored a shopping trip for two dozen members of the Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area. All the children attend one of the club’s two branches in Costa Mesa.
Before boarding a bus to travel from the Boys & Girls Club to Target, the children received backpacks full of school supplies. Each child had a shopping buddy to help him or her. The buddies are members of Kiwanis-sponsored student service leadership clubs: Circle K Club of Orange Coast College and the Key Clubs of Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools. Kiwanians were available to help with fitting and selecting appropriate clothing. After the shopping trip, all participants returned to the Boys & Girls Club for a picnic, also organized by Kiwanis. After an hour of games run by student leaders, a barbecue lunch was served.
“I wanted to thank you and all the people involved in making Kelly’s Closet happen this past Saturday,” Steve Lampron, director of the Boys & Girls Club Westside branch, wrote afterward. “The smiles on the kids faces was something special, like Christmas morning when kids open presents! We at the Club could not be more appreciative of what Kiwanis did for our kids and families. It will be a day we long remember. Again thanks!”
According to project director Jeff Dimsdale, a student committee including Kelly Ho, Shelby Paisley and John Nam of Orange Coast Circle K, Amy To and Justine Alonzo of Costa Mesa Key Club, and Gurjot Kaur of Estancia Key Club planned the day and led a team of more than 25 students who came to help the children.
Dimsdale said that “it is our hope to be able to find funding to continue this project in upcoming years.”

Funding for this project, the first Kelly’s Closet, was provided through grants from C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian’s Department of Community Medicine, and the Costa Mesa Community Foundation.
Marine Corps car wash
On Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., bring your car and support young Marines and their families as they work to raise funds for their November Marine Birthday Ball, which costs each Marine $80 and is required. The venue is the parking lot behind the bank on the corner of Westcliff and Dover drives, next to The Arches, Dan Marcheano’s great restaurant. There will be food, bagpipers, and moments to show your genuine one-on-one support for our brave and young men and women. The cost for a car wash is a donation. Come on out, meet the Marines and show them your support.
