Prominent Newport Beach citizens Rush and Linda Hill opened their bay view home last week welcoming some 70 friends who came to sign nomination papers on behalf of Rush Hill, who is planning to run for Newport Beach City Council representing District 3. Don Webb, the current District 3 councilman, is termed out.

The local crowd enjoying the evening gathering included a host of Newport VIPs, including Richard Luehrs, president of the Chamber of Commerce; former City Manager Homer Bludau and his wife, Janet; former State Secretary of Education Marian Bergeson and her husband, Garth Bergeson; and a host of previous Newport Beach mayors, including Dennis O’Neil, Jan Debay and Tod Ridgeway.

Enjoying the hors d’ oeuvres provided by Stalker’s Fine Foods were Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Ralph Rodheim, restaurateur Dan Marcheano, Joe and Mary Ann Robinson, Liddy and Scott Paulsen, Roger Alford and Michelle Mullen.

The nomination signing event was followed this week with a Tuesday evening bay cruise on The Catalina Flyer, attracting a sold-out boat of community well-wishers launching Rush Hill’s campaign.

Civic pride is heavy on the mind of Balboa Bay Club hotelier Henry Schielein, who plans to raise significant dollars next week at his 16th annual Gentleman’s Smoker and Lobster Clambake.

The July 30 men’s dinner on the beach at The Balboa Bay Club helps fund the 1221 Scholarship Fund, which awards college grants annually to deserving Newport-Mesa students.

More than $500,000 has been awarded to date, thanks in part to the generosity of local gents attending the event each year wearing their obligatory navy blue blazers.

This year, former football star Anthony Davis will be on hand for the evening, which is being videotaped for broadcast by PBS TV station executive Mitchell Sussman and his Raven TV Production Co. One of the highlights of the evening is Schielein’s libation and luxury travel auction featuring some of the most spectacular prizes offered on the California Riviera’s charity circuit.

Last-minute tickets are still available and priced at $275 per person. Please call (949) 630-4201 to make a reservation and support The 1221 Scholarship Fund.
