Community & Clubs: Passing the check
I was invited to Thursday’s Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa meeting to cover the check presentation made by club president Ken Mueller to Dan Monahan, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Harbor Area, and Lou Yantorn Branch Athletic Director Harland Anderson. The check was in the amount of $5,776. This money represented the proceeds of their eighth annual golf tournament.
Upon accepting the contribution, Monahan said “this will go a long way to help kids in real need this summer at the Boys and Girls Clubs.”

The program for the Kiwanis Club Thursday was a testimonial by Susan Lee. A U.S. Air Force and Vietnam War veteran, she found herself homeless a year ago as the apartment building she was living in was sold and the rents were raised by more than 50% on short notice.
She found help at the Village at Cabrillo, a former Navy base in Long Beach, which has 520 beds for homeless vets. The housing is free and includes three meals a day. The center provides mental health help, job skill training and help in finding a job until the veteran gets back on his or her feet. CHRISTMAS IN SEPTEMBER
The Rotary Club of Costa Mesa is sponsoring Christmas in September for families to get their portrait taken in time for sharing at Christmas. The portrait session includes an 8-by-10-inch folio print and two 5-by-7-inch prints for $100 (regularly $395), with the proceeds supporting Rotary Club of Costa Mesa projects. Discounted prices will also be given on holiday cards and additional prints, according to Rotarian and photographer Kellianne Jordan.
Projects supported by the proceeds include SOS Backpacks, Adopt a Family, School Supplies for Romanian Orphans, library books and seedlings for third-graders, YMCA scholarship program, NMUSD Dental Screenings, support for local senior residents and other community projects.
You can schedule your family portrait between 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 for Caspers Wilderness Park; Sunday, Sept. 12 at Mason Regional Park; or Sunday, Sept. 26 at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
