Community & Clubs: Computer help for seniors
Computer Friends is a club dedicated to helping seniors learn computer basics while enriching their creative efforts through speakers, classes and social functions. Their meeting takes place 1 p.m. today, the second Wednesday of the month, at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach.
The meeting topic will be “File Management of Photos” and the speaker will be Marianna Spoelder. Learn how to organize, print, e-mail, rename and view your pictures in a slide show once you have downloaded them to your computer. The speaker will be followed by Randy Langel, the club’s computer expert, who will answer questions and comment on the latest developments in computer technology and the Internet. The fee is $2 and everyone is welcome.
LIONS PRESIDENTS PRESENTS AWARDS
Outgoing President Raul Jara of the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club presented his annual awards to Sriram Vasudevan as Rookie of the Year, Bob Ooten as Most Valuable Lion and Kirk Bauermeister as Lion of the Year. According to Lion Mike Scheafer, Lion Sri was commended for his help whenever necessary and his positive attitude and enthusiasm. Lion Bob was recognized for always “being there.” Lion Kirk was singled out for sponsoring eight new members, his work in the community and his commitment to the ideals of Lions International.

Jerry Morris was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa for 2010-11, replacing Marc Aarons, whose term expired. Serving with Morris are Victor Currie, Vice President; Sarah Greenberg-Davis, Secretary; Anna Wong, Club Treasurer, Steve Phair, Foundation Treasurer; Bill Hossfield, president elect; Steve Speer and Art Walton, Club Service; Gary Konecne, Vocational Service, Bill Davies, Community Service; Bob Merring, International Service, Roger Gilbert, RI Foundation, Dan Hoffmann, public relations and fundraising; A.J. Theilen, Sgt. at Arms and Miyuki Smith-Richardson, programs.
KIWANIS OFFICERS CONTINUE TIL OCTOBER
The Kiwanis of Newport Beach – Corona del Mar officers change Oct. 1, according to current president Joel Carlson. Getting ready for his elevation to club president is Greg Porto and vice president Kevin Hollingsworth.
NEW OFFICERS SAILING WITH OASIS
The Oasis Sailing Club recently elected new officers to serve for the next two years. Installed as Commodore was Paul Bjorkholm, and the new Vice-Commodore is Malcolm Read. Also, John Kraus was installed as Treasurer, and Hugh Logan as Secretary. Associated with the Oasis Senior Center, the sailing club offers ocean sailing aboard the club’s two sailboats, a Newport 30 and Hunter 326, on almost a daily basis. Many say that the Oasis III and Oasis IV are the most heavily used vessels docked in Newport Bay, averaging 17 to 20 sailing days per month.
The Oasis Sailing Club meets the last Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Newport Beach Central Library, and will move back to the Oasis Senior Center when the new center opens this fall.
