Community & Clubs: Eating lobsters for good causes
Save the date of Aug. 1 for the second annual Newport Beach Lobsterfest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise. The Lobsterfest will be held at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marine on Newport Beach’s Back Bay beginning at 4 p.m. for beach time and silent auction, and 6 p.m. for the lobster dinner.
“While there are always growing pains with any new event, this year’s will be even better than last year,” said Rotarian Laura Dietz. “VIP tables will include premium wines, choice of whole lobster or lobster tail and tri-tip, side dishes, no-host bar, a separate entrance, free valet parking, and a special ambience away from the crowds but near the water on a hard surface.”
VIP seating comes at a price of $150 while the regular ticket costs $75, which still includes lobster, tri-tip, side dishes and no-host bar plus $10 per car for parking. The Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation is the lead beneficiary, with 10% of all ticket sales be made to the foundation. The funds raised at the Lobsterfest will also go to help many other local nonprofit organizations, said Rotarian Carl Lachman.
The surf band Hodaddies will provide both oldies but goodies and ballads for dancing. There will also be the sandcastle contest for children, with a professional instructor and prizes for the winners. The auction items will include a hotel stay at the 5-star Club Cascadas de Baja in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, provided by the very generous Giddings Co., who also has a 5-star resort in Puerto Vallarta. NEW OFFICERS IN HARBOR MESA LIONS CLUB
The Harbor Mesa Lions club held its installation of officers 2010-2011 recently at the home of Keith and Carol Van Holt. More than 50 people attended this annual event to install the new officers and board for the next year. Officiating for the installation was Past District 4 L4 Gov. Elizabeth Warren. Club officers for the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club “The Fish Fry Club” will change effective July 1. Installed as the president for the 2010-2011 term is President Mike McIlroy, Vice President Bob Ooten, Secretary Mike Scheafer and Club Treasurer Lion Raul Jara. Serving as directors are Roberto Jara, Ryan Ferryman, Jim Ferryman, Lee Gibb and serving as webmaster is Matt Scheafer.
