Community & Clubs: Parade looking for boaters
The Old Glory Boat Parade is part of the Fourth of July tradition in Newport Beach and sponsored by the American Legion Yacht Club. Thousands of people will watch the parade from the shoreline as well as from their own boats as the parade circles Newport Harbor.
The ALYC is looking for a good turnout of boats, large and small, to participate in the parade this year. If you are a boat owner or know someone who is, they need you to deck out your vessel with a patriotic “Stars and Stripes” theme. GOT TALENT TO SHARE?
“As a member of the Friends of OASIS board I’ve taken on a project to help recruit people who are interested in volunteering to provide complimentary classes or facilitate activities or groups at the new OASIS Senior Center when it opens next fall,” wrote Millard “Mac” MacAdam, a Friends of OASIS board member.
“As you probably know, the complimentary programs once enjoyed by our senior citizens that were provided by local community colleges have been cut because of the bankrupt condition in which we find the State of California,” MacAdam stated.
MacAdam’s goal is to recruit as many people as possible who have the heart and interest and talent to teach interesting complimentary classes or facilitate group activities using their talents, interests and experiences. EXCHANGE CLUB SUPPORT CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
Past Exchange Club of Newport Harbor President Norm Von Herzen presented Child Abuse Prevention Center Executive Director Scott Trotter a check for $3,001. This was the culmination of Norm’s challenge offering $1,500 in matching funds to the membership’s contribution. Norm took a lot of ribbing all in good spirit from his fellow club members, for this worthy cause. Club Treasurer Tom Norton then presented Scott Trotter with a separate check from the club for $26,000. The second check was part of the proceeds from the annual movie benefit held each fall.
